Happy Days

Working in rescue, there seem to be plenty of sad days, but this weekend we had a couple of happy days!

A few months ago, a terribly skinny boxer came to Legacy Boxer Rescue. That was one of the sad days. We named her Donut, and slowly but surely, she soaked up all the nutrition and love that her foster mom, Kathy, could give.

This weekend she got adopted to a wonderful family that my moms met a few days before. Donut is loving her new life with her new family and new boxer brother! And she's not a skinny girl anymore!

Another sad day was when we found out that one of our favorite boxers, Dora, had died unexpectedly. Her family and kids were terribly sad.

And yet another sad day was when we met Heather, who was very thin and had a terribly broken leg. She also had a super cute underbite!

Fast forward to yesterday and those two sad days came together to make a happy ending. Dora's family felt incomplete without boxer feet in the house. They met Heather and fell in love.

Another happy day in rescue! I wish they were all this happy!

Rescue is hard (I work in cat rescue in Toronto) but your story has tears in my eyes. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

I'm glad for the two Boxers and for you folks.

We're surviving a rash of returns lately. THREE of the dogs I've fostered have been returned in the last 2 weeks. One dog, I must admit, turned out to be a spectacularly bad fit for the adopter. I don't think anyone could have seen it in advance. But the other two were returned for what I privately think are stupid and selfish reasons. Worse yet, I suspect that one adopter I really liked has turned out to be one of those I-have-a-new-boyfriend-so-I-have-no-time-for-a-dog-anymore types. I never pegged her for that type, obviously. I feel so angry about it that I'd like to slap her once or twice. I've never actually hit anyone in my life, but I could make a start.

Luckily, there is an upside going on, too. Two dogs that have been up for adoption for ages and have never generated much interest have been adopted into ideal homes in the past week. Two families with all the factors we hoped for finally came along. And we've found a long-term foster home for the most insane, most annoying and most incontinent Rat Terrier the world has ever known. The director bought us a round of beers at a local bar in celebration. The waiter asked us what we were celebrating. We told him. He came back in a few minutes and said that the owner had told him to offer us dinner on the house in honor of the good work we do.

So, you win some you lose some. And there are great people in the world and there are total assholes, too. There are days volunteering in animal rescue when all I can see are the assholes. I need to remind myself of the existence of the great people, too.

No home is complete without pitter patter of a boxer. Hurray for Dora's family. I am sure Dora is watching over her old family.

Donut and Heather/Heidi have both called their former foster mom to report that they are doing WONDERFULLY and their new families love them very much :) And we owe it all to Cubby's Mom's for sending both of these families our way.
